Young Drivers
Our group has a young drivers' representative, who:
- acts as a point of contact for any young group members
- liaises with the group in relation to events and offerings that may be of interest to our younger members
- promotes the group, and advanced driving in general, to young drivers
We consider a young driver to be one aged 25 or under.
Click on the Contact Us button at the top of the page to contact our young drivers' representative.
Schools and Colleges
We are happy to visit schools and colleges to give a talk to students on the benefits of Advanced Driving, free of charge. This is often most beneficial when combined with other road safety activities, for example those involving the Police or the Fire Service, where we have the opportunity to show students how they can avoid the tragic scenarios portrayed in their presentations by driving to the System of Car Control.
Momentum
Momentum is a product, launched in late 2010, and aimed at drivers aged 26 and under as a program to help develop driving skills. The first step is an online assessment, providing an examiner with an understanding of the participant’s risk profile. Following from this, a 60 minute on-road assessment will be carried out, taken by a qualified IAM examiner. As well as giving them an assessment of their driving, this will introduce young people to the concept of advanced driving. Furthermore, participants are given the opportunity to go on to take the Skill for Life programme with a £40 discount off the normal price of £139.
Safety and Insurance
Young drivers are generally considered to be high-risk, especially by insurance companies, partly because of their lack of driving experience and partly because they are considered by many to be less mature in their decision making when it comes to driving safety. Unfortunately the vast majority of research does support this belief. The following is quoted from the IAM's publication - Young Drivers - Where and When They are Unsafe:
Three significant factors dictate how people drive, and their likelihood of being in a crash:
- Age
Drivers under 25 have an exceptionally high risk; the risk is greatest for drivers under 20, who are the most inexperienced.
- Experience
The risk of being in a crash peaks immediately after passing the driving test, and declines steadily over the following 12 months and beyond, as new drivers learn from their solo driving experiences.
- Gender
Young male drivers are up to twice as likely to be in a crash as younger females.
Not only can completing an advanced driving course improve your enjoyment and safety when driving, but because drivers who have passed the IAM's advanced driving test are considered lower-risk this can result in lower insurance costs - an important issue for many young drivers!
