What We Do
Our primary goal is to improve general driving safety through one-on-one
observations
, consisting of a group adviser accompanying a prospective
member and advising on advanced driving techniques. Application for this
service is managed via the IAM's Skill For Life programme:
Skill for Lifeis the IAMs most popular membership option, giving you - in one payment of £139.00 - everything you need to pass your Advanced Driving Test and become a full Member of the IAM. The package includes:
- The IAM book
Advanced Driving - The Essential Guide Advanced Drivingthe IAMs tri-annual Members magazine- All Test preparation work (undertaken by your local IAM Group)
- Entry into the Advanced Driving Test
- IAM Associate status, with an automatic upgrade to full Membership of the IAM (upon passing the Advanced Driving Test within 12 months).
- Access to the
Membersarea of this website (with details of Members' Events, Membership Services and Special Offers).Preparation for the Advanced Test is conducted by volunteers in your local IAM Group. On completing your purchase of
Skill for Life, either online or by other payment to the IAM, you will receive a Group Directory covering all local IAM Groups for you to contact the one nearest to you (or the most convenient). Each group organises theirObserved Runslocally. Most people can achieveTest standardafter 6-8 observed runs (typically a fortnight apart), so you could beTest readyin 12-16 weeks.
For an idea of what to expect on a Skill for
Life
course, you can
read a testimonial
by an existing group member.
For those who don't want to dive straight into the Skill for Life programme but would still like to get some advice on their general driving, we can also provide a one-off session through the IAM's DriveCheck programme:
DriveCheck is a short Driving Assessment aimed at everyone who is interested in safer driving but who doesn't feel they are (yet) ready to take the IAM Advanced Test.
DriveCheck applicants are able to contact a local IAM Group who should be able to arrange a mutually convenient time for the assessment to take place.
It takes about an hour comprising an initial introduction (document check etc.), followed by a 35-40 minute drive with the Group observer, followed by a feedback session, at which the candidate will be presented with a written feedback form.
DriveCheck candidates then become an Associate of the IAM, for a period of 12 months.
In the case of Skill for
Life
you can become a member of our group for at least a year (or
longer if you pass the advanced driving test within that first year), which
provides access to a number of additional services provided exclusively within
our group, including:
- Access to indoor events
- Access to outdoor events (ride-alongs, visits, etc.)
- Full access to our group forum, allowing you to keep in touch with other group member and keep abreast of changes with your local advanced driving group
- Access to member only benefits in the group forum. Like discounts on Garmin Sat Nav's
